We all want the secrets to getting a flat belly, and researchers are listening. A team in Sweden recently conducted a belly fat study that should help lift the taboo on fats–at least some of them. Read on to learn how you could fight fat with fat and get a smaller waistline.

The Study

The recent study involved 39 men, half of whom were given muffins made with saturated fat, while the other half were given muffins with unsaturated fat, adding an extra 750 calories per day to their diets.

All other diet factors were the same among the participants. The researchers found that the group that ate the saturated fat developed more dangerous visceral fat, accumulating around the belly and internal organs, while the other group gained muscle as well as weight.

These findings support the idea that polyunsaturated fats aid muscle development while promoting weight loss–great news for those who want to lose weight and still eat delicious food.

Sources & Smart Swaps

So where are these polyunsaturated fats found? Fortunately, these “good” fats can be found in healthful, delicious foods that are part of a wholesome diet. Sources of these good fats include avocados, nuts, seeds, and flaxseed or sunflower oil.

Smart swaps don’t have to mean compromising flavor! Try switching out bad fats like margarine with peanut, olive, or sunflower oil. Used to buttering your toast? Try spreading on avocado instead! Instead of reaching for a fried or sweetened snack, raw nuts and fruit are tasty and nutritious.

Targeting Trouble Areas

Diet alone doesn’t yield a flat belly, and sometimes diet and exercise together still aren’t enough to blast belly fat. Why? Problem areas get more troublesome as we age, making it harder to get a sleek and toned tummy.

Other factors may also influence belly fat and excess skin: previous pregnancies or extreme weight loss. Diet and exercise are a great place to start, but sometimes it’s necessary to take additional measures–such as a tummy tuck.

Is a Tummy Tuck Right For You?

A tummy tuck is a great solution for people who are at or near their goal weight, but suffer from additional fat and/or excess skin in the abdominal area. The surgery gets rid of extra fat and skin and repairs stretched out stomach muscles to result in a tight tummy.
